LS-WS1.0TGL/R1 without HDDs. How do I reset and access this gem???

Dear Folks,
I have here an LS-WS1.0TGL/R1 (S/N 15843490900908) without HDDs. How do I reset and access this little gem? Ideally so that it automatically obtains an IP-address via DHCP and I can access it via its webserver.
The pdf-manual doesn't even mention that. And none of the procedures described here seem to work

And is it true that the FW is written to the HDD(s)? Will this device run with one HDD or does it need two of them?

start the device

The search function's only hit is your mentioning of it!
Not mentioned in user manual either.

OK, 2 working HDDs (tested with USB 2 SATA bridge) put in. Red LED flashes 6 times for many rounds. With RJ45 plugged in, finally constant red LED and green LED constantly flickering. NAS Navigator does not find the device. How do I proceed?

OK, it's up and running again! Thanks. Just one more thing:

The web interface is in Japanese and the decription to change it to English as decribed here

does NOT work for me. No matter how often I select English plus the proper coding and press OK, he LS ignores it and keeps the Japanese language.
