LS-QV8.0TL/R5 - E06 Error and unable to TFTP

So I'll try not to be too sarcastic ;) since most of us here have been sent here by Buffalo support.

I have a LS-QV8.0TL/R5 which was on the dreaded 1.62 firmware version. Had a HDD go bad (I'm assuming) and somehow the NAS decided to stop responding. So I searched the forum and found a way to get it into EM mode.  Following all the FAQs posted still couldn't get it to respond and take a firmware update.  (see links below)

FAQ 2 of 5 http://forums.buffalotech.com/index.php?topic=10184.0
FAQ 3 of http://forums.buffalotech.com/index.php?topic=10185.0

I also found this http://commonmanrants.blogspot.com/2014/01/buffalo-linkstation-partition-not-found.html which seems to be a subset of what's in FAQ2.

I tried the fw update (using version 1.70 from the buffalo website) with each drive in separately and it would get to the point of rebooting the NAS then I would go back to the dreaded 6 red flashes.  I have a new drive coming and was going to try it all again but want to make sure I'm following the correct procedure.

I believe I can get it back into EM mode again with drives in it, but can't for the life of me get the 1.70 fw to load to it.

What am I doing wrong?

I'd like NOT to get to the point where the one poster suggested holding it over a trash can, letting it loose and then going to buy something else. The only addition I'd add to his/her post is to make sure you tell at least one blog about the experience so instead of it just going to 10 people it goes to 10,000 when google picks up the thread... LOL

So anyone else have this issue and how'd you fix it?

Many thanks in advance.

So in messing with this today I managed to get the TFTP started once I added in a brand new drive... but then thought once the firmware was updated I added back the other drives to see if I could restore the files.

Bad decision.

Now I'm back to the E06 no matter how many drives I put into the stupid box.

I'm seriously thinking of trashing the box and putting the drives into a box that actually works and doesn't have the myriad of issues this Linkstation has based on the forum posts.

Buyer Beware!

Sounds familiar - http://forums.buffalotech.com/index.php?topic=22915.0 same problem on a LS-QV4 - no help from tech support (what a misnamed function).  Seems no one able to get these to work after a dead/missing disk and no one at Buffalo prepared to admit how they initialise the disks in the first place - presumably to persuade us to buy another unit??

Being converted to iomega - cannot be worse.
