Max hard drive size for LS-WTGL/R1
« on: October 01, 2010, 11:42:31 AM »

I want to upgrade the two 500GB drives in it to 1.0GB if possible, but i cant find the max size drives for this unit.  It is the one with the 3.XX firmware and with 2 USB ports on the back.

Offically these units have been tested and are sold upto 2 x 1TB HDD's from Buffalo.

Although i have seen people use it successfully with 2 x 2TB HDD's.

PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.

thanks Davo,

i stumbled across this thread and found that info:

http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/Drive-Upgrade-in-LS-Pro-Duo/td-p/24200

Also, Colin137 said the instructions on upgrading the drives was stickied in the top of the Storage section, but i don't see it.

Yes I did it. I have a Link Station Pro Duo with 4TB now.

First you have to put in the new two 2TB drives in your Link Station. This is easy.

Then you can look at this Link: http://superuser.com/questions/53812/buffalo-linkstation-pro-duo-1tb-upgrade-drives

It works with 2x2TB, too.

Colin only said, that you can find the TFTP process in the Storage section. Buffalo will not give intructions to upgrade your drive (i think they will never do so, i think they want to earn money with new NAS and they don't want to be blamed for user mistakes):

http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/FAQ-3-of-5-TFTP-boot-procedure-please-read-this/td-p/11015

After this process you have to install the firmware.

Last point: There is no guarantee that it works with your NAS, too..but: It's a great feeling after you have done it! It's worth to try it.

Just remember that this is not supported by Buffalo.

If I were you, I would say this, too.

But what problem can occur ? If it doesn't work you can put your old drives back in the LinkStation and everything will be like it was before, if you are not too clumsy and destroy the hardware....

I'm from Germany, so sorry for English mistakes.

If you cannot get the blocks of data served back to the unit with the TFTP boot then the unit will not be able to boot up.

I don't understand what you write.

If i turn off the Linkstation and take out the original harddisks and put these original harddisks back to the LinkStation if it does't work to put bigger ones in it, there should not be any problem. TFTP boot only writes data to the harddisks and not to the hardware of the LinkStation, am I right ?

If you have any problems with the new HDD's then the old ones will work fine.

There should be no reason why the old ones should not work.
