I have a LinkStation LS-WX2.0TL/R1, firmware version 1.54. My Macs are using OS 10.7.2 (Lion).

I successfully set up Time Machine backup for multiple Mac on the same LinkStation. It was not well-supported or intuitive.

What I did was as follows:

1. Under users, I set up multiple users: one for each Mac.

2. Uner shared folders,

a. I set up a shared folder per Mac according to the instructions (Apple, Recycle bin disabled, Disk Backup not checked).

b. I gave each shared folder access restrictions: restricted to one user (read/write), for the intended Mac.

3. Under Extensions > Time Machine

a. I made sure Time Machine was Enabled.

b. For Target Folder I chose the first of my folders and saved.

c. Then I went to the first Mac and in it's Time Machine preferences I clicked Select Select Disk. The target folder shows and is usable.

d. I then went back to the Buffalo admin and selected the second folder as the Target.

e. I went to the second Mac and set up Time Machine for that Mac. It saw the second folder.

This works, but you have to change the target on the LinkStation whenever you set up another Mac. The Mac will remember what it was set to and will backup successfully even though the LinkStation no longer has that as a target. However, if you hit Select Disk in your Time Machine preferences you won't see the old folder because LinkStation is no longer broadcasting that folder to it doesn't appear as a choice for Time Machine to pick. Workable but far from ideal.

NASNaviator2 version 2.4 points to the web admin. I assume this is the case for all Buffalo products on all Macs. The instructions provided by Buffalo under the help screen of the web admin does not match the menus.

  1. After setting up a Shared Folder according to the instructins, the next step is to choose Time Machine from the left side menu. There is no left side menu.
  2. The instrux mentions stuff about entering the Target Host Name and Target MAC address. I see no place to enter any of that.
