Hi,

the HDD on my HS-DH500GL has given up.  The unit is out of warrenty, so I have pulled the HDD out.  I've tried to retrieve any info on another machine - but no luck.

I now have an identical HDD I wish to install into the NAS casing.

I've seen I need to format the drive first into XFS?  I've never come across XFS (or Linux) before - can anyone give me any pointers  as to how I can achieve this.

(And I presume this is the proceedure - format HDD using XFS, install the HDD into the enclosure and perform a TFTP)

Thanks

JoshC

XFS is Linux based and you have to have the drive formatted to that.  After you put the new HD in you ahve to perform the TFTP boot and from there a firmware update.  You can find all of the info in the FAQ's.

Great - thanks.

I was wondering if the various partitions had to be created too - but if its just a case of formatting the entire drive as XFS.

Cheers

Once you load the TFTP boot it will create the partition table for you:smileywink:

Right, managed to get it all sorted (well chuffed as i'm hardly a computer wiz...)

For future reference:

To format the disk to XFS I used ubuntu (free download).  Booted off the ubuntu CD (with the HDD connected internally to my PC).

With ubuntu there is a DiskUtility that should have helped although for some reason I was getting a disk in use error.  I ebed up using terminal and typing the command:

sudu mkfs.xfs -f /dev/sda

(where "/dev/sda" was the HDD location (which I got from the DiskUtility mentioned above))

Once the disk is in XFS format, whack it back in the NAS enclosure and instigate the TFTP (check the forum sticky for this info) to get the unit in EM mode then apply the firmware flash (download from your countries Buffalo website)

Bingo.
