RAID is not a replacement for a backup! Here's why.

How long for rescanning/repairing

Hi there All, I've had long scanning times before, (see previous thread) but this one is taking the biscuit. The NAS got full up to 100% without me noticing till it was too late.

I freed up some space and it has been switching between either 'Checking Raid' or 'Scanning Array' since midnight August 25th! = 9 days

It's an old LS-WXL model.

So is it time to admit defeat, switch off and reformat both disks.? Ideas!!

This is another good illustration of why you need to have several backups.

These LS-WXL models are super slow and they are over 10 years old and don't support SMB 2.x I am pretty sure.  SMB 1.x has security flaws in it.  The last one I had I ran in JBOD mode, because running RAID on that is just too slow.  As you see, 9 days for it to check the raid and still going.

What size disks are you using?    You're probably going to need to wait another week or two at least.

If you have the data backed up, I would drop back and punt, and just reset it to factory defaults, then put it in JBOD mode so you do not have this scanning problem.

What happened?  Are there any other errors about the disks?  Did one fail?

It's hard to get SMART data for these older units, I don't think it supports SMART data, whereas the newer units do.

My advice would be to move into a Terastation 3400 or higher, as those support SMB 2.x and are much faster.  You can find a used 4 bay unit on ebay for about 100 or less on a good day.  And Buffalo can sell you caddies for the units, if necessary.

Even with Terastations, parity checking any RAID 1 array is going to take a long time.  That's just how these raid checks go.  It is best to have good offline backups, and backup often to avoid this problem.

Hi there and thanks for your reply..

I am aware of the problems with these and SMB v1, but I have no important stuff on them (I have three from wayback (like 2010 or so) purely just for the media library.

As mentioned I have posted earlier when another one decided to stop enabling the media server extension, (which I now don't use anyway).

I am pretty sure that a power off and reinitialisation will be the fix, just wondering how long to wait > anyone know what is the Guinness Book Of Records, 'record' for Raid scanning?

BTW -  if anyone is facing the SMB v1 issue, it is pretty easy to setup these LS-WXL to SMB v2 > but for me the OPPO BD players only like SMB v1, so that's that.

Hahaha Buffalo LS-WXL rides again..

Hope I'm not speaking too soon, but after another couple of days waiting I powered off. All power, removed the power jack, not just switched off. Connected the power while holding the function button in, the nas started blue fast flashing, I waited till the drives started to spin, then released the func button and pressed it in again.

After a few seconds the orange led flashed a couple of times and then the blue stopped flashing, just stayed on steady.

Everything is as it was before, yeeharrr.

How cool- it lives again.  I have no idea what you did.  I would have thought doing that would have reflashed the firmware? (Sounds like it did not) Or maybe you forced reset something?  No idea.

I never could get DLNA to work between an LS220 and a Vizio TV long ago, so I gave up on it and moved to a media PC. My TV would find the DLNA server, but nothing was playable.  Buffalo didn't have have MKV file support for it back then (and probably still don't? no idea.)

Can you explain what you did to set it up, and how you are playing media files from these LS-WXL units?  Maybe it is certain file types you are using are why it actually works.  hmmmm.  I couldn't get it to play or view MKV, MP4, MP3 music or JPG/GIF pictures at all.

The LS-WXL is one model newer than the one I had problems with- which was a LS-WL.  I thought you had this older model.  The admin page with that LS-WL would definitely time out during raid checks and disk checks, and you could not login again until the process finished.  And it was painfully slow copying to it at about 10MB/sec.  I haven't messed with Linkstations much in a few years.

You never mentioned how big the disks were- 1tb?

I'd guess a 1tb drive should check within a few days.  A PC should be able to check those disks within a couple of hours anyway.

Maybe it got hung up due to bad blocks or something else.  If any of your media files don't play, or the LS-WXL starts freaking out later, then I would say it is a bad blocks problem for sure.

If it was me, at some point I would use something like Hard Disk Sentinel on windows, and do a full read disk surface scan to be sure there are no bad blocks.  Older disks do get bit rot over time.  Buffalo doesn't really have any good utilities to check for that.  So if you have problems, that's probably next on the list to check...

I didn't do anything special, but wait, and wait, and wait... during that time I could not access the web UI.

After many days I took the plunge and removed the power. the reconnected the power while holding in the function button. First time it just went back to the orange flashing. I tried again and then it started with the blue led on and the flashing orange for rescanning the raid, and I could access the web UI.

So I just waited again, and waited..

The firmware was rewritten because it went back to the default user and PW, media server enabled etc... but all contents are still there. I imagine that the process I fumbled through forced it.

I am using the old NAS' as only storage, nothing installed on them, not using the Squeezebox server, itunes or Web Access. But I am using the DLNA media server on two Nas'.
The files (all types Video and Audio) play thru my AppleTv or Oppo and directly on my Samsung 'smart tv'. Flac, MP3, mkv, mp4, avi and mov.

The HHD are 2Tb on both sides, so 2Tb if in raid. Two Nas' are raid and two not.

LS220D - remember that you may need to enable the SMB v1 in the settings, cos it is set to SMB v2 by default. (My OPPO's will only work in SMB v1 - they don't even "see" the Nas if it is set to SMB v2) Mybe the same with the vizio !!?

Good luck cheers CD

any more Q's please go ahead
