I'm struggling to get this set up.
I tried following a YouTube video, but it's ... incomplete?
Following that I got the LS210 to show up in File Explorer as "share (10.168.nnn.nnn (LinkStation)) but if I try to open that I get "share is not accessible. You might not have permission ..."
I think I should reset the LS 210 to the factory defaults (ID & Password) to start again.
The User Manual says something to the effect that "the configuration number" will appear and to enter it on the "Confirm Operation screen" but I'd feel a lot better if the description was more detailed.
Anybody got a screenshot for this operation?
TIA

I don't think this is a password issue.

You cannot map to the network drive by IP address.  You must map it by hostname.

That said, you need to install NAS Navigator to find the hostname for your LS210.  Or, you need to login to your Orbi router and go to wherever the connected devices list is, and find the name of your LS210 that way.  NAS Navigator is a better bet overall.

As I noted in another post for how to map the drive:

Start with this:
1.  Make sure SMB 2.0 is turned on for the LS210.  Windows 11 needs it to communicate with the Linkstation 210

2.  How are you mapping the drive?  Are you using the windows 'map network drive' icon from File Explorer?  If so, right click the mapped share and disconnect it.
or delete the previous share via command prompt:
net use X: /delete   where X: is the drive you mapped the linkstation to.

3.  Try the command net use command from a command prompt window and see what happens.
net use X: \\LS210D-hostname-here\Linkstation-Share-here /user:LS210D-hostname-here\username password
ex:  net use X: \\LS210D-01\ShareFolder1 /user:LS210D-01\MyUserName MyPassword

what is the error message you get, if any?

always use the hostname\user format so that the map is using the account that is on the linkstation.  otherwise you may have problems.

I don't map with windows explorer and I have never had problems mapping a LinkStation using the net use command.  try it and let us know the error- if there is one.

Thanks for replying!
Am a complete dewfuss at network setups and terms.

SMB is turned on
I'm operating off an Win_10 Desktop
Navigator is installed
and gives me access to the LS210, the only NAS on the my home network
If I right click the icon labeled "LS210DE01" I get a dropdown menu and under Properties I can see the IP Address
I have also created a Desktop Shortcut labeled "LS210DE01", is that the name?

Are you advising to do this in lieu of a reset of the LS 210 to the factory defaults?
TIA

CMD, then
"net use X: \\LS210DE01\Chuck /user:LS210D-01\1002 (password) net use X: \\LS210DE01\Chuck /user:LS210D-01\1002 (password)

Returns:
The syntax of this command is:
NET USE
[devicename | *] [\\computername\sharename[\volume] [password | *]]
        [/USER:[domainname\]username]
        [/USER:[dotted domain name\]username]
        [/USER:[username@dotted domain name]
        [/SMARTCARD]
        [/SAVECRED]
        [/REQUIREINTEGRITY]
        [/REQUIREPRIVACY]
        [/WRITETHROUGH]
        [[/DELETE] | [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]]

NET USE {devicename | *} [password | *] /HOME

NET USE [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]

Sure thing.  No worries Chuck.

Yes, correct.  If NAS Navigator is showing LS210DE01, then that is the hostname for your linkstation

IF you have the admin password, then I don't think you need to reset the LS 210 to factory defaults (at least- not yet anyway).  But you are going to have to check some things on the admin console.

If you do a reset, you might reset the whole unit (and I don't know if you have a backup of your data, etc).  And so I wouldn't do that just yet. A reset can wipe out everything on the unit, including your files.  So you want to be sure, they are backed up first.

Are you able to go to the admin page via the Linkstation IP address in a web browser?  Or you can try https://LS210DE01  which should work if that is the right hostname for your linkstation.

The username is admin, and the password- you should have it.  if you don't then yeah we have to do a reset.  You'll have to look at the manual for resetting it without wiping your data.  There's a way to do a full FACTORY RESET which wipes the data, and there is another way to reset it for just the admin login and such, and that is the one you would need.

So try to login first, and see what happens.

Once you login, check that you have the right share name, username, password,  and the correct permissions for the share.

after you do that, you were close on the command.

Try this:
maybe this format makes a bit more sense?
net use X: \\LS-Host-Name-Here\Share-Name-Here /user:LS-Host-Name-Here\LS-User-Name-Here (password)

so for you it is probably
net use X: \\LS210DE01\Chuck /user:LS210DE01\1002 (password)

The username might be the problem too.  You have the number.  You need the actual- username.  What is it?  Did you make a user called Chuck?

If so then it should be

net use X: \\LS210DE01\Chuck /user:LS210DE01\Chuck (password)

Or if the user name is Charles then it would be
net use X: \\LS210DE01\Chuck /user:LS210DE01\Charles (password)

or for admin
net use X: \\LS210DE01\Chuck /user:LS210DE01\admin (password)

you need to login to the console web browser page, and see what you picked for a username.

And just ignore the user number 1002.  The linkstation assigns numbers to users, but that's only for internal to the unit, not needed for the file share mapping.

Reply with any errors or messages.

Thanks for the reply,
I rest the Admin Password, as that's the usual procedure for access to any network location
As to the Reset - there's mothing I have stored on the Linkstation of major importance.
I did the one transfer just to see - would it really work and how fast the transfer was.
So a full factory reset, and yes I reset the Admin ID.

My File Explorer windows contain (icon) "share (10,168,168,nnn (LinkStation)" and when I select that get
a Open Folder error,
Ill try to attach an image.

ChuckTin

If I invoke Navigator2 and then put in "Chuck/Cawfee" in for Network Credentials I see files ("Custom Office Templates") under "share", they are trash and I can lose them. I had tried to set up "Chuck" at the same level as share. but I only see that if I click on the IP Address in the File Explorer line then I get the setup I thought I was doing earlier - "Archive_Scans, Chuck, Info share and usbdisk", (usbdisk is one I plugged into the back of the LinkStation) so I'm "backing up" a level??
Confusing.

Ok so you did a factory reset on the linkstation?  If so by default there are only two shares
share
info

I'm not sure how you are mapping it.  This open folder error could be many things.

This could be the wrong permissions on the shared folder for the user you want to use.  It could be how windows mapped the drive.

It also could be a problem with the PC.  What Windows version are you using?   You might have the windows network settings set to where you cannot browse the network, or file and print sharing may be off?  I don't know without seeing it.

Or it could be something related to user account settings either on the linkstation, or a problem with SMB 2.x not being enabled on the linkstation (I believe it is off by default after the reset you did???)

Without screenshots it is hard to pinpoint and fix this.

I would suggest sending me screenshots of the share and user permissions and the user acct from the linkstation.  The posting system here does not allow you to attach images for whatever reason.

The only way you can do that is by email, or you have to share links from photos you have online somewhere.

Or, if you want, I can try to help you via screen share with a windows quick assist session.  Drop me a PM on here if you want to try either of these ways.

Click my name on the left of the posting lists, it should take you to a page to where you can send a PM from there.

Sounds like the old data is still there for whatever reason.  Maybe a full factory reset wasn't done, but you are in it partially anyway.

Correct, you went back to basically- the root of the available linkstation shares.
And so am reading this as

Linkstation
\Archive_Scans
\Chuck
\Info
\share
\usbdisk

All these are on the same level from the root of the linkstation shares

Linkstation\Chuck could be mapped as X drive
Linkstation\share could be mapped as Z drive
and so on

that's where the net use or windows map network drive comes in
But... that's also where we are having a open folder error from the sounds of things...

-----

It sounds like the Chuck share is created at the right spot, the question is- are the permissions for it correct?  I'm thinking there's something wrong there.

I would check the account settings:
I'd make sure username Chuck is in both the Users group and the Admin group

for the share settings> share permissions
you need to set Chuck to have read/write access to the Chuck folder as well

I am thinking either
Chuck isn't there on the share,
or one of the groups isn't there on the share permissions,
or one of the groups isn't on the user account

Something isn't lined up right.

Also, as noted in my earlier post.  Make sure SMB 2.X is ON.  I think by default it is OFF after a reset.  Verify this.

-----

The reason you don't want to map by IP address (besides it being DHCP and CAN change if the IP isn't renewed by the DHCP server/your router) is because this method is less secure than mapping it by the hostname, as using the hostname uses Kerberos for security (more secure).

So to get the hostname, you could also do this command nbtstat -A 192.168.1.xxx  < this would be the IP of your linkstation

The host name for my Terastation in this example, is TS54251

such that

C:\Users\MyUsername>nbtstat -A 192.168.1.251

Ethernet:
Node IpAddress: [192.168.1.109] Scope Id: []

           NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table

       Name               Type         Status
    ---------------------------------------------
    TS54251        <00>  UNIQUE      Registered
    TS54251        <03>  UNIQUE      Registered
    TS54251        <20>  UNIQUE      Registered
    WORKGROUP      <1E>  GROUP       Registered
    WORKGROUP      <00>  GROUP       Registered

    MAC Address = 00-00-00-00-00-00

The host name for my Terastation in this example, is TS54251

such that if it has a share named chuck

net use X: \\TS54251\Chuck /user:TS5451\Chuck Cawfee

something to that effect

or for the default share
net use Y: \\TS54251\share /user:TS5451\Chuck Cawfee

This should at least get the letters mapped to these share locations.

you could also do
net use Z: \\TS54251\usbdisk /user:TS5451\Chuck Cawfee

if you wanted to maintain this network mapping after rebooting windows.
net use X: \\TS54251\Chuck /user:TS5451\Chuck Cawfee /persistent:yes

If you do this, it DOES save the password to your Windows Credential Manager.  So be careful with that, if you are on a shared PC, I would save this as a .bat file somewhere (without /persistent:yes) and just run it as needed.

Drive maps are preferable to using \\hostnames or \\192.168.x.x in file explorer because windows WILL poll those locations periodically, and can make file explorer sluggish over time.

to delete the shares you can do
net X: /delete
net * /delete to delete ALL drive maps

That's about all I can do with text right now.  Maybe the answer is in here.  Try this and see what goes on.
