Power usage in LinkStation
« on: October 05, 2008, 08:53:41 PM »

I upgraded my old HD H250Lan to a new LS-CH1.0TL which is working nicely. Since I run the NAS 24x7, I measured the power consumption. The new unit specifies 17W with no USB drive attached and I see it only using 12W idle which is nice. What I don't like is that instead of a simple plug as with the older product, there is now a wall-wart. The wall-wart uses 3W even if the unit is turned off. I don't have any other modern wall-warts that eat that much power.

Here are my measurements:

New 1TB:

3W  Off

12W Idle

13W Read

13W Write

28W Max during startup

Old 250GB:

1W  Off

10W Idle

11W Read

11W Write

25W Max during startup

I guess this thing rocks in terms of watts/GB, and it meets the spec handily, but to go backwards so badly with the wall-wart is disappointing. The extra 2W running 24x7 for a year consumes 17.5kWh.
