After several hours of work,  "cleaning" the two HD twice and still ending up with a red light, I happened to press the button and the light turned white and set up was complete.
To Buffalo Tech: instruction by pictures do not tell the whole story.

Which pictures?
**A single copy of data, even on a RAID array, is NOT a backup! Hard drive failure is not a question of IF, but WHEN! Don't take my word for it, take Google's!**

I assume the ones in the quick setup guide. Apparently a picture does not tell a thousand words in this case. I thought it was pretty clear myself.
