Linkstation Pro Duo safe WITHOUT router???

I am having great difficulty getting a Linkstation Pro Duo to be found behind my Linksys WT54G router.  BuffaloNas.com finds it and points to the public ip but then nothing.  Port 20 % 21 are forwarded to the internal address of the Nas.  I think I have covered all bases but it still can't be found from outside.

So....  I have an unused static ip address (T1 line) and wanted to know if this Buffalo product is "safe" enough to be placed on an open connection?  Is it's "firewall" robust?  Opinions welcome as I'd like to eliminate the router and Nat.

Are you sure, ports 20%21 are correct ? My LS PRO DUO needs port 9000 to be forwarded in the router config to the internal address. That buffalonas.com knows the correct public IP is normal, as bufallonas receives its informations from a "push" of the LS PRO DUO, but the way back is the problem, and this is the port forwarding issue.

Try port 9000 and you will be happy (hopefully) :-)

Depends on what you want to do, ports 20-21 are for FTP, and 9000 is for the Web Access feature. Generally though you would want to have it behind some kind of NAT/Firewall.

Well I wanted web access and ftp so I should have been clear that I forwarded 9000, 21, and 20 to the Buffalo at 192.168.1.115.  Internally I can get to it just fine but it's not found from the internet with the Linksys WRT54G in the way.  I have upgraded the router firmware, even used the DMZ feature to open up address .115 to the world but it still won't find it.  I have re-initialized the Buffalo several times and redone the steps but still can't get to it from outside.

I guess if you recommend it stay behind a router, I will buy another router brand and try it again on my alternate T1 line.  Just in case, if port forwarding is done correctly, whats the biggest culprit I should look for when it can't be found from the internet?
