Hi,

I have a linkstation pro LS-WXL/R1 2TB server and I want to back it up onto an external USB drive (HD-LBU2). I have hooked it up, set up both drives to have back up enabled and then set up a scheduled back up. The problem is that the back up fails pretty quickly. The error log indicates that the file system on the USB drive is read only - I enclose the error log below.

-------- BEGIN BACKUP 2013/04/25 05:37:24 array1/share -> ABC@usbdisk1 --------
sending incremental file list
rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes [sender]: Broken pipe (32)
rsync: mkdir "/mnt/usbdisk1/201304250537" failed: Read-only file system (30)
rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at main.c(576) [receiver=3.0.3]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (9 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(635) [sender=3.0.3]
-------- END BACKUP 2013/04/25 05:37:25 array1/share -> ABC@usbdisk1 --------

Can anyone advise on how to proceed and solve this issue?

All help would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Rich

You have the USB HDD formatted to NTFS, you need to reformat it to XFS via the web gui (system -> Storage)

PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.

Hi Davo,

Thank you so much for the suggestions - it's really appreciated. I have tried loading the system->Storage page and it comes up totally blank. I  can't see either the NAS or the USB HDD to format.

I think I'm doing something stupid. Do you have any further ideas?

Hi

Can anyone help me on this - how to format the external USB HDD? If I can't do it via the NAS then can I do it by plugging it directly into a PC?

Thanks

Richard

Reset the NAS (System -> Restore/Erase -> Restore Linkstation) and see if the USB HDD appears in the Storage section. Have you tested the USB HDD on a PC? You can format it to XFS if you have a Linux OS available.

Ah ha - some success. I did the system restore and am now able to view the USB drive on the System -> format page. Thanks for your help and I'll let you know if the back up works when the format is complete.

Success!

All of my backups are now fully working - Thanks Davo.
