I took my NAS to work with me one night recently and loaded a ton of data from our network so we'd have a secondary copy of the info should we need it. While doing so, I updated the firmware. All went swimmingly. However, when I got the system home, it took a very long time to start up. When it finally reported an error loading the kernel, I decided to restart it. Since then, it launches as normal, gets to a screen that tells me it's "now booting," and just sits there doing that for however long I let it. I've let it sit overnight, through the next workday, and still "now booting." Any ideas?

Evilsmurf1,

   Try the following steps:

1. Shut down the NAS (if powered on)

2. Open the front door that gains access to the hard disks

3. There is a button (INIT) on the underside of the LCD readout that you have to hold down while powering the device on (best method is to hold the INIT button before powering on the NAS)

4. If successful you should see a message (on the LCD readout) that says System EM Booting

5. Once the unit has an IP address on the front LCD readout attempt to run the firmware update for the TS Live found http://www.buffalotech.com/support/getfile/?hs-dhtgl-up_214_102.zip" target="_blank">here

6. If all goes well and the firmware updates make sure you go to the user interface of the NAS (by entering it's IP address in your internet browser address bar) and go to Maintenance->Initialization

7. There should be a button that allows you to "Restore TeraStation to manufacturer defaults".  Click on the corresponding button and enter in the confirmation code.

NOTE: Initializing the unit after a firmware update clears out footprints of the old firmware which usually causes recurring errors.

8. Locate the device on your network using the NAS Navi utility http://www.buffalotech.com/support/getfile/?TsClient.zip" target="_blank">located here (or the readout on the front LCD of the NAS) and you should be able to access the unit by the displayed IP address

Hopefully, that does the trick for you.

Thanks for the help there. I'll try that tonight. Will it erase my data? I have about 300GB stored on my RAID 5 (4x 250GB).

So, I tried that a few times this weekend. It just says "System EM mode Booting....." and sits there with all 4 drive access lights blinking in unison every 3/4 seconds or so. It stays this way for over 8 hours straight (that's the longest stretch I've done thus far). I've tried multiple times.

Plan B?

Remove a drive at a time.

So, remove drive one, boot it, wait ten minutes, see if it turns on.

If it doesn't turn it off, reattach drive one, remove drive two and continue the process until it you're found a config in which to boot it up in.
