We are a photography studio with several Linkstations Pro.  My question is:  when hard drives reach their three-year anniversary, we have a policy of replacing/upgrading them just as a matter of preventive maintenance.  CAN THE HDS IN THE LINKSTATIONS PRO BE REPLACED AND, IF SO, HOW DOES ONE FORMAT THEM AND WHERE IS THE OPERATING SYSTEM?

It is possible though Buffalo does not support it and it does VOID warranty

kevin,

Yes, I'm fully aware of the warranty status.  This would be for drives at least 3 years old and out of warranty.  I like the "old fashioned" style of the Linkstation Pros and since they have worked so well for us, why not keep them running?

Hi noblepantry,

There are a number of guides you can use for changing the hard drive inside the linksation pro.  One of my favorites is found at:

http://buffalo.nas-central.org/index.php/Upgrade_(or_replace)_the_existing_LinkStation_hard_drive#New_Generation_-_LSPro.2CLSLive

There is even a link to a very good video that walks you through the hardware process of physically changing the drive.  There is lots of advice on what you need to do to get the hard drive formatted and the necessary software installed.

FYI: the above link and process in that link will not work for the model number of linkstation he is refering to (LS-VL)

You need to remove the old disk, replace with a new one, TFTP the unit to get it into EM mode and then reinstall the firmware.

PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.
