The NAS Drive is... there but... not there?

My first post to this forum and not sure if this is the right place.  It's not so much about "storage" as the seeming inability to do so...

I am using a Buffalo LinkStation for NAS for TimeMachine from a MacBook Pro

Time Machine worked fine with my Buffalo Linkstation  LDS210D667 – until I upgraded to Sonoma.

Following instructions from Apple to restart the backups, I have formatted the Buffalo drive.

Now I  am unable to reconnect / mount to time machine.

I have created a folder on the drive using the NAS app and toggled Time Machine to 'on.' The folder is called 'Backups.'  It appears when I open the drive in Finder.  When I try to open the drive / folder, Finder crashes and gives me this error message: "The operation can't be completed because the original item for "Backups" can't be found.

Needless to say. the drive will not "Mount" when I try to add it as the destination for Time Machine,.

I spent nearly two hours with Apple Care –stressing that this problem didn't exist before I installed Sonoma AND that I'd only gotten to this state by following their instructions.  After two hour the advisor gave up, told me to contact Buffalo, and abruptly ended the call.

So here I am.  I have also submitted a ticket via email (since my whole 90 days of telephone support ended just about two months ago...)

Does anybody reading these digits have a clue?

What else do I need to do to get this drive mounted and begin making backups again?

Thanks,

I haven't gotten a reply here yet, but I did hear rather promptly from Buffalo Support via email.  They suggested checking the Network settings to make sure I had AFP selected.  I recreated that Backups folder with that setting and... the drive mounted and my Time Machine backup has begun.

Would that my advisor at Apple had caught that detail. 😡
