Ministation USB power cable

I've read the reply here that the USB power cable is needed for USA1 use.

I had already plugged my MS PS300U2 into the USB1 port on my Mac G4 and it mounted OK, but I didn't go any further.

 

Since it mounted will it run OK on USB1 without the power cable?  I don't want to damage it, but I'm short the second port and would have to get a powered hub.

If you can access the drive then it has enough power, it may not be as quick as it could be if it is under powered, however it won't damage it.
