Hi.   I am a new owner of a TeraStations III 4TB's.   I will only be backing up about 100 GB's of data to start with so as you can see I have left alot of room to grow.   My main question is what is the benefits of greating seperate arrays versus just working of one array?    I was thinking of creating a different array for different departments but wondering if there was technically a reason to.

Thanks.

There could be a series of reasons, you could have 2 raid 1 arrays for best redundancy for 2 seperate divisions, a raid 0 for faster access of non important files, and a raid 1 for the redundancy and security.  With a Raid 5 you are able to "lose" a disk and still have the unit operational until a replacement disk is obtained to restart the redundancy part of the array, each array has its own strengths and weakenesses that can be tailored to each individual.  You may just need to look at the big picture to see what you ultimately want to do and decide from there

So are you saying the only reason to create seperate arrays is if you want to create different raid configurations?    I was planning on doing the two arrays in Raid 1 but out of the box the device is set up for raid 5 which would actually give me a little bit more space.   Both configurations will fail if two drives fail so since they are equal in that regard I might as well go with the more space of Raid 5 on one array instead of the two RAID 1 arrays correct?

That is correct, so in this respect raid 5 would be more beneficial for space
