Time Machine Error: Network Username & Password problem

I have a LinkStation Duo: LS-WX1.0TL/R1, firmware 1.24, set up as Raid 1.

I have

  • an iMac running OS X 10.6.4, connected by wire to an Airport Extreme Base Station;
  • a MacBook running OS X 10.6.4, connected wirelessly to the Airport Extreme Base Station.
  • Both of these systems are running dual Intel processors.

I have connected the LinkStation directly to an ethernet port on the Airport Extreme Base Station. I have created a dedicated Time Machine folder, in which I created the "sparsebundle" for the iMac, as well as the MacBook. When I setup Time Machine on the MacBook to use the LinkStation for backup, it works fine. When I set up the iMac in the same way, I get a "Network Username or Password error" when Time Machine tries to mount the drive. Finder sees the drive just fine, and I can drag and drop files and folders back and forth as I should. What gives?

Details that may or may not be incidental:

  • The iMac did back up correctly once. It was the first system I set up this way.
  • The first time I set up the MacBook, I made a second "Time Machine" folder, to try to keep the backups separate. This was a mistake. It was after this that the iMac quit being able to connect.
  • I have since completely removed and replaced the original two Time Machine shares, and have created a single share with two sparsebundle files in it.
  • No matter what I do (including resetting the base station and deleting and recreating the network.plist on the iMac), the MacBook works and the iMac doesn't.

Nikki

When the sparsebundle is created is is MAC address specific, if you are using 2 different units you will need 2 different folders with 2 different sparsebundles
