LS-CH1 - Sharing USB drive on Windows network - Unix Root permissions?

Hi

 

I have a linkstation 1TB running firmware 1.24 - my desktop PC is running Windows 7

 

I plugged in a WD powerbook to the drive as "additional" storage. I tried to set up a user so I could access this drive through Windows and restrict access. 

 

With no user restrictions, I am able to copy to and from this drive with no problems. 

 

I added a user (username: my windows logon, password: my windows password) and I set up access restrictions. I set access to be "read/write" but regardless of what I do, I'm unable to copy things to this disk. 

 

When I try and copy something to the drive, I get a message about needing permission:

 

"You require permission from Unix User\root to make changes to this file"

 

What does this mean? I know it means that I need unix root permissions, but why? I'm running a Windows box.... 

 

Anyone got any ideas?

Create a different user than the on you are logged into windows as. Try that and If that doesnt help, update the firmware and restore the unit.

Firstly - thanks for your suggestions.  I've upgraded the firmware and reset the settings. 

 

I've done as you suggested, and it has made no difference. Windows 7 still tells me I need unix/root permission to delete files from the drive or copy things to the drive.

 

Could this be an issue with the USB drive I have plugged in, rather than the linkstation?

Are you able to access all other share folders but the external hard drive share folder?

yes. I have a folder on the linkstation that has user restrictions, and these work just fine. I can copy to and from the drive with no problems, and nobody else on the network can.
