Just got our first Buffalo Terrastation (Rackmount III) on a dealer promo and my first impression is not good.

I have run into the problem that I can't join our domain because we use strong administrator passwords and the Terrastation won't accept the characters we use. In this day and age of needing to use the best security practices I find this pretty unbelievable, especially as this problem was raised well over a year ago (there are many posts in this forum about this problem) and Buffalo have done nothing to address it. Is this something that you are going to address or should I just send the unit back and go back to Netgear ReadyNAS?

You can put in a feature request.  The more feed back that we get the more likely changes will be implemented.

Sorry but there have been requests for this "feature" to be implemented for over a year. In this thread here: http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/password-limitations/td-p/234" target="_blank">http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/password-limitations/td-p/234 one of the forum admins says "I will make the recommendation to our corporate office."; that was 11-17-2008.

There should be no need to make repeated requests for what is clearly a security issue. It is the the failure to address this sort of issue that leads to Buffalo being percieved as a less professional alternative in the NAS market.

PCPiranha

I understand but the more people that put forth a feature request the more likely the change will be implemented.

I would have expected if you advertise a product that is compatible with AD that you would be able to handle complex passwords!  I chose this product on that premise.  However I surely CANNOT recommend to anyone else as a VAR and system support consultant to purchase and deploy these products!

Please add this functionality ASAP!

I agree this need to be remedied. I was amazed that the Tearastation is not simply passing the password along and logging into my Active  Directory with the password I provide. Why does the code check it has incompatible password for a local logon. It's not a limitation of Active Directory but the Tera Station kernel. I of course understand that the local admin password will have to adhere to your standards but fail to understand why it's checking the password complexity for remote domain login

I just got my unit and now need to create a less complex password and user to allow it to join my Active Directory domain.  This will create audit and security issues. Unfortunately, I will have to relegate this unit to my test network until this "bug" is resolved.

It looks like this has been open for a year or more. Can someone let me know if it is in the works or just not ever possible with the kernel in place. Show stopper here.
