I have an LS220DB31 and a WD MyCloud as a simple mirrored backup.    If I allow the Windows 11 24H2 update to install I loose access to both of them.  Can't see them or find them etc etc.  I know its some SMB now "unhandment" or security update that I guess Buffalo has never upgraded the firmeware to handle....... and so now even after videos and Microsoft technical papers all blaming the manfucaturers etc etc  I am somehow supposed to play around with the OS or figure out how to override or bypass the SMB calls or something?

Does Buffalo not have a fix for this?   Or at least something I can click in the management software to setup SMB and the storage target properly???

I have spend hours and hours and even an hour plus here searching.....I did find some mapping questions which seem similar??

Help?  (I mean the EASY button help please)  I have been in storage since 180k floppies and MFM hard drive controllers from Xebec and pokeing and peeking on Apples and Commodores.......I don't want to do that crap?

Simple and a few lines please????

Microsoft has made two major changes of the last 10~ years that have added extra steps or limitations for everyone.
Where everyone used to have trusted networking, its now un-trusted.

The whole purpose behind security changes is to make things HARDER for bad actors.
Sorry this is not an EASY button as you are looking for, it has been made harder for ALL...

Background:
1st: Deprecation of SMBv1 (Microsoft's decision to discontinue patching)
-> This change was resolved with a firmware update that added SMBv2, depending on the age of your NAS, if you have updated it, and if you use it with older SMBv1 computers/devices, it will need to be either switched to SMBv2 only or set to auto*
2nd: Restriction of "guest"/"anonymous" network share access AND behavior* associated
Naturally, you have the always and forever issue: handling of order of processes*

*The literal example here, is that despite having SMB set to auto, which allows both v1 and v2 clients to work, Windows is SUPPOSED to try SMBv2 first, it often does NOT, or fails without ever actually trying, you then stick that problem with the guest change, where its again SUPPOSED to prompt for user credentials, instead, it sees guest is a valid account (even if disallowed), and instead of denying access and prompting as it should by logical progression, it often times will do nothing visually just like the SMBv1/v2...

Solutions: though it may be for NEWLY setup units, you can follow the guide here:
https://buffaloamericas.com/LS200SG
Or here for existing setups:
https://buffaloamericas.com/knowledge-base/KB5951

Outside of a vanilla fresh Windows install, there are enough Security or Work settings that can prevent any instructions provided from working...

Buffalo does have a KB for enabling SMBv1, I will ask if there is one for re-enabling Guest access, that may help you with your non-Buffalo NAS as well.

Thank you!! I was about to give up and just send this NAS back, I was able to get this to work with these helpful steps.

WaveExistance!!!!!!!!!

I did not get a notification from the forum that you or anybody had responded, but in desperation after waving off for 4 weeks another UPDATE from windows for this horrid release, I thought I would stumble in here!!!

I have not tried any of the above, but just for the shred of hope and a Buffalo support for my box that you have provided >> I applaud and THANK YOU.

I was sadly looking at other mfr for my next upgrade to "solve" this issue?

I am now pawing around and brought up NAS Navigator2 AND also without notification it seems there is NEW FIRMWARE on 10/30 that I can ingest and update as well????  Yippee!!!!

<<soapbox / rant on>>

Of course earlier in the year in April my "warranty" ended on the Buffalo LS220 box.  I actually don't consider this a warranty issue in my 44 years in IT (early on selling 1210C Xebec hard drive controllers to IBM and Michael Dell and others) as software interoperability and other items were always a support forward item for future customer satisfaction and retention.  Especially if operating systems and drivers APIs and libraries were changing/advancing?

As expected its clear Microsoft screwed everybody as usual with drunken programming and program management and made a wholesale change causing incompatibility to others and disabling many networks and enterprises???

<<soapbox off>>

THANK YOU BUFFALO and THANK YOU WaveExistance

Oofa, this looks a little scary?  A lot of steps.  Almost feels like I am Poking and Peeking and plodding along?  Yikes.

Question: Should I FIRST allow/install the Windows 11 H2 update I have been pushing off for a year?  THEN do the

========================================

On LS200 and older Buffalo NAS models:
•    Create an user account if desired or use the default admin account.
•    Proceed to edit folder settings, enable access restrictions and set the desired user account to Read/Write access.

3.    Navigate to Windows Credential Manager:
Method 1: Navigate to Windows Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager.
Method 2: Press Win + R, type control keymgr.dll, and press Enter.

4.    In Credential Manager, and click "Windows Credentials"

5.    Under the Windows Credential section click "Add Windows Credentials"

•    In "Internet or Network address", enter the IP address of the NAS, or the HOSTNAME of the NAS.
Note:
Registering the host name or IP address depends on the access method. Example: When accessing by host name, register the host name.
Registering both the host name and IP address does not cause any problem, so it is recommended to register both by adding two entries.

•    Use the created NAS user account Username and Password or the default admin Username and password.

For Windows Domain environment:
"Internet or Network address", "user name" will differ depending on the domain participating situation of the connected Windows terminal and NAS (TeraStation). Check the table below and enter the ones appropriate for your environment.

Not in Domain Example:

In Domain Example:

6.    In the "Windows credential information" column, confirm the information you entered has been registered.

7.    Open File Explorer, type \\[NAS_IP_ADDRESS] (e.g., \\192.168.1.100), and press Enter.

This should bring up a list of shared folders, proceed to open the desired folder to confirm successful access.

8.    Go back to the folder listing, right click on the desired folder, and click "Map network drive "

9.    Customize drive letter as desired, click Finish to complete drive mapping.

10. To confirm the share mapping is done correctly, the mapped drive will be shown and connected at the left panel of the File Explorer.
Click on the mapped drive to navigate to the mapped share.

Well installed the W11H2 update i last tried in March.....  even after the DS220 firmware update from Buffalo there must be something more I have to do..... been looking through these Release Notes and directions and I feel like I am close in the Credentials area and somehow maybe playing with the SMB settings although they are set to Auto I think but you guys had advised that Auto sometimes does not work????

Hmmmm, how can I insert my screenshot or any picture for that matter?  I have to post the picture to my website and then link it to here???  That's not inserting a picture?

Not sure what to try or mess with without bombing the whole thing??
