Old LS-XHL starts in EM Mode. Now what?

I have an old LS-XHL with 2TB drive which has been running 24/7 for the past 8 years or so. The current 2TB drive is (I think) about 4years old. Yesterday, from one moment to the other, it started blinking 11 (one short, one long) so I guess it has picked up a few bad sectors. I also wasn't able to reach the drive anymore so I powered it down and back up again. The first time I did that it gave me code 11 again. Did another power cycle and now I don't get the blinking red LED anymore, but it's still unreachable.

NASNavigator tells me it's in EM mode. Soooo, now what?

BTW, Powering off with the switch works, so I'm guessing the drive isn't completely FUBAR?

I found my LinkStation's manual an I now know what the flashing LED meant.

So first time I noticed the LinkStation couldn't be reached, it was flashing E11 (Fan Error). After the first restart, it was flashing E07 (No Hard Disk detected).

It was still visible in NasNavigator in EM mode, so I flashed the firmware again (v1.75). According to the firmware updater, writing the software was successful and it rebooted the LinkStation. But while trying to reboot, the LinkStation flashed E07 again. Power cycled the Linkstation and it flashed I25 (Updating the firmware) which was a good sign. Then it apparently rebooted and it flashed E07 again (No HDD). Another power cycle and now it doesn't flash anything, but I can't see it in NasNavigator. I doesn't power off anymore with the power button, so I think something went wrong during the firmware update.

Sounds like the HDD has failed.
