One of the hard drives in my Buffalo Duo died.  I have the system set up in a mirror format.  I opened the case up and found the hard drive that had died and bought the same hard drive and installed it into the buffalo.  When the hard drive powers up the hard drive that was originally in the buffalo lights up green but the new hard drive flashes green then orange.  What does that mean?

Is the light flashing?  It could just be because it is out of the array. Also please understand that this is not supported but I will help you as best as I can.

Yes the light alternates between green and orange

There is not much we can do as stated above we do not support this and it does now void your warranty.  If you can log into the unit then go to Disk Managment>Raid Setup there should be 2 check boxes one of them is unchecked then check it and restructure the RAID.  If not try the 3 FAQs.

Can someone explain this thread?  Are you saying that Buffalo sells a RAID1 array in which a bad disk can not be replaced?  This seems beyond insane.  Is the idea that when a disk fails, you should move all of your data to a non-Buffalo product and never purchase a Buffalo product again?

I have the same product and problem listed above.  Hmm.. .maybe phone support can be more helpful.

In the past, I have always had good experiences with Buffalo products.  I had a good conversation with the phone support folks, and - if what they told me was correct - I was happy with what they had to tell me.  This is what they said:

Apparently on the Drivestation Duo the RAID is entirely supported in hardware, and no software configuration tool is needed.  When the drive turns on, the flashing ORANGE light is telling you that it is in the process of automatically restoring the replaced drive using the data on the good disk.

I was advised that for a Drivestation Duo 1Tb (my product, containing two 500GB drives) that this process should be expected to take "five or six hours".  So, hopefully, after that time, my disk will be back in business.  In the meantime I can access all of my data, so if this works as advertised, I would say: score one for Buffalo.

So what ended up happening is that it just took a long time for the data to be reimaged back onto the other hard drive.  At first I thought the flashing light was a sign that the data was not being transfered or that I had done something wrong on my assembly but it just ment that data was transfering.  Just plug in the new drive and let it sit for a good 24 hours before doing anything with it.

All of my data got back over
