UFS Explorer Data Recovery Problem with Terastation

Hi all,

I have one of the original Terastations (1tb - 4 x 250gb IDE RAID 5 configwhich stopped appearing on my network.  I took the decision to crack it open and recover the data via the UFS explorer route.

I connected the 4 drives to a macbook pro (no desktop available), via usb ide external adapters.

2 of the drives are recognised in the way that the UFS explorer software told me to expect, but 2 are each recognised as "USB Device".

I have tried one of the  "USB Device" in another laptop (in case of some limitation with the external adapters) but receieved the same response.

UFS's response was to try these via the IDE interface directly to a desktop, which seems a sensible approach.  My thought is that these drives are not recoverable (shudder!), and that this may require professional intervention.

Has anyone seen this behaviour in the terastation IDE drives, linked via external adapters?  Any other helpful thoughts of suggestions.

Regards

Matt

EDIT: forgot to say, used vista and win7 to try and recognise the drive.  It is possible this could be to do with the order of attaching the drives?

We have had no direct experience using UFS Explorer. I've only recommended the software elsewhere in the forum because of its advertised capabilities and customer recommendations. I'll change the title of the thread to hopefully attract more knowledgeable community members.

Does anyone have any suggestions for mclay?

thanks colin, problem solved now. Not 100% sure how, but i suspect that it is the order in whicthe drives are plugged into the pc. I also updated the drivers to attempt to remove the usb device only reference.  1 or the 2 was recognised and I was able to begin a recovery of the data.  Slow progress, but it works, and another big thumbs up for hfs explorer.

Mclay-

How did you copy the files over using UFS Explorer? I've been trying to find a step-by-step process to do this. I have a 2 y/o Linkstation Live 1TB unit with a bad HDD (6 light error). I am currently trying to use a UFS Explorer product to read the LS' XFS file system.

Via UFS, I can see the 1TB HDD (connected via SATA in my Vista PC). I am using Raise Data Recovery for XFS. It sees my NTFS-formatted partitions on my Vista PC and I can browse the files. The second drive (1TB LS drive) shows no partition at all. From here, how do actually get this old HDD drive prepped & ready to move the files off of it to a new one within the UFS Explorer program? I'm thinking I need to 1) "Find Lost Partition," 2) "Recover Lost Data," then 3) "Save RAW image" file. Once an image is saved, do I just swap in a new drive and load the image then transfer to the LS enclosure? OR can I transfer my LS files to a NTFS drive in my Vista PC and transfer to a new NAS?

I am willing to purchase a new NAS and start new, but would like to keep my 2yr collection of media. Any step-by-step guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm not sure if mclay is not active or not but I would recommend searching through Nas Central or the UFS forums.
