Hi,

I have an old Buffalo LinkStation - model number: LS-W2.OT GL/R1

Is there a way to connect this drive directly to my PC without going through any network?   If so then what would I need?

I have a Windows 7 Machine.

Thanks!

Connect it with a LAN cable to the PC, then set a static IP on the network card of the laptop within range of the NAS. Should then be able to connect.
PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.
Having network issues? Drop me an email: info@interwebsireland.com and we will get it fixed!

Have i helped you? Buy me a coffee as a thanks!

Just an ordinary LAN cable?  Not one of those reversed ones?   What IP Address do I use?

Doesn't work.  No network.

Nornal LAN cable, check the NAS Navigator for the IP, if you have the NAS set to DHCP then just use 169.254.1.1 and subnet 255.255.0.0

I don't know much about Windows 7 - but, it appears you first need to be connected to a network before you can set a static IP - but there's no network to connect to. Unless there's a way to access the dialog box that allows one to add/change IP-address - but, like I said - it seems you first need to be connected to a network.

I don't see any buttons on my NAS that set my external drive to DHCP.    I've plugged in the cable - and basically nothing happens (no network is ever detected).

To be clear - there are only two components.

Component A: The Buffalo LinkStation Model LS-W2.OT GL/R1
Component B: A Windows 7 computer (desktop)

Your missed something. You also have a router of some kind, since you're like using the Windows 7 computer to post to this forum. That router likely has some ethernet ports on it. You should be able to connect the LinkStation to one of those ports and access it from the computer.

Not the same computer.    As stated I have two components listed in my previous post.
