I have a LinkStation Pro Duo LS-WVL 2.0 TB NAS that I have had for several years. I want to start regular backups to a USB attached storage device. It is a Western Digital 5TB drive I just purchased. I assume it is NTFS formatted.

Before I set up the backup, I updated the firmware on the NAS unit. It is now at firmware version 1.75.

I created a backup job through the admin console, set it to run daily and selected Overwrite Backup mode. (Differential Backup).

After it ran the first night, it reported a status of Error so I updated the backup job to create a log file.

I checked the log the next day, and the log reported that the USB attached volume was Read-Only.

Before I plugged the drive into the USB port on the NAS, I attached the drive to my computer and was able to create a directory, so the drive is not read-only.

I checked on the admin console under "Shared Folders" and the USB drive is recognized.
The information reported for the USB drive is as follows:
Name: usbdisk1
Volume: USB Disk 1
Attribute: Read & Write
Recycle Bin: X (No)
Support: Windows, Apple, Disk Backup
Restrictions: X (none)

Can an NTFS formatted drive be used to backup this model and age NAS storage unit?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Here is a sample of the log file in which the errors are reported:

No, it needs to be XFS

Thanks for the reply. When I purchased the LinkStation, I read that the USB drive had to be a Linux formatted volume (XFS) and never bothered using the USB backup capability. Recently, I wanted to start backing up the NAS and tried the USB drive.

I want the drive to also be accessible from my Windows 10 computer. So if the NAS were to fail, I could access and recover the data from the Windows machine.

If I were to reformat this drive as XFS, which I assume I can do from the Linkstation Admin console, is there a way to to able to mount this drive for read and write from Windows 10?

Not natively, you can use FAT32 if the file sizes are smaller than 4GN
