Linkstation Pro Duo connected to MAC OS X with large file structure speed is slow

   I have a NAS (Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo) connected via a gigabit ethernet switch to my MacPro box. I have no problems mounting the drive or seeing the root directory via SMB. If I traverse to a folder containing more than a couple hundred files, it takes a significant amount of time for the directory of files to be displayed. For example a directory with 600 files took over five minutes to be displayed. When I try to copy about 300 files to that directory, it takes an hour of "preparing to copy" before actually copying. Then when copying the transfer speed is anything from 2kb/s to 10mb/s. Most of the time it is in the 200kb/s range. I can copy files to smaller (number of files) directories without any issues. If I read and copy files to the same linkstation using dual boot and booting up w/windows. It flys at the correct speed.

   Attempt to mount shares using AFP instead of SMB and see if there is a difference in your speed.

I am running a Linkstation Pro Duo with 3.10 firmware and accessing it from a Macbook Pro (10.6 snow leopard) and PCs running XP. There are a large number of files stored on the LinkStation (mostly pictures). I am also experiencing extremely slow directory lookups i.e., if you open a directory with only ten items in it, it can takes up to five minutes to list the files. I do not remember this problem happening with 3.9 firmware. Unfortunately this makes the LinkStation Pro almost useless.
