Need to setup a HOSTNAME on Linkstation Duo - LS-WX2.0TL/R1

I just purchased (and received) a couple weeks ago ... a Limitation Duo 2 TB - model # LS-WX2.0TL/R1.

I have it running fine, installed all the updated SW, etc... and I am running the latest firmware (1.24) and the latest NASNavigator (2.24), but it is connected using a static IP address I setup on my router ( \\192.168.0.200\share), but what I want to do is set up the URL so it uses a HOSTNAME as the computer name (\\computer name\folder path) instead of the IP. ( \\lsw\share ).

... I named the Linkstation to just  "lsw" (no quotes) and it shows up that way in my Dlink Dual Extreme-N router. but I cannot get the Windows XP Pro (SP3) to acknowledge it. I know I could put in a local HOSTS entry on the PC - but I would rather not do that - because I want to use this name on other PCs on my home network.

I have also tried setting up an external DNS (dyndns.com) entry ... and while that works with my Internet browser - it does not work with a mapped drive (SMB).

Oh this is a home DSL network with a DHCP connection - so I do not have the DNS servers on my side of the network (they are the IP providers).

I am very technical and I know this seems simple - but I am drawing a blank on the solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Windows can tend to be very picky when it comes to connecting via ip address or host name. For random reasons a host name will not work but the IP address will. The only way to connect via hostname would be through either the map drive utility using \\thehostname\thefolder  . Or you could go through run and type \\thehostname then right click the folder you want and click map network drive. The same thing with the IP address.

I think you misunderstand where my issue is... it is not with windows... it is getting the NAS Linkstation Duo to register a hostname... so I can use it on Windows.

I know it is just not a windows issue because I have a non-windows device that will not accept IP addresses only hostnames and it cannot locate the Linkstation drive... So my question is how to I set the Hostname on the linkstation drive. The Device Name does not seem to do that for me.

What firmware version do you have on the unit?   The Linkstation name is the hostname for the unit.

thanks for the reply, as I had origionally stated... I am running the latest firmware (1.24)

And I set the linkstation drivename to "lsw" but it appears not to have taken. I have changed it to severl things including: "mydrive" "NASDrive" "ThisDrive1" and a few more ... none of them appears to "distribute" the name to the network - so it can be used as a HostName.

I agree it should be simple as setting the linkstation name - but that is not working for me and I cannot figure out why.

Correct me if im wrong.. your saying you can access the LS on the IP but not the hostname? If this is correct the it is a DNS issue on your local network, cant be anything else.

PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.

I had this problem before.
Solution.
Settings DNS on the network client  (including Buffalo NAS) to use the Router's IP.
Do not use external DNS.
