are these products still supported?
have one with original 250gb drives. seems to work and I can access it through the app on my Mac Mini.

saw on the forum that someone had luck putting in the green series of 2TB HD and its working but then saw where there may not be enough power to drive 2TB drives.

wondering if it should be sold on ebay or recycled or if it could replace my qnap TS-228. would be nice to ahve 4 drives instead of the 2.

power usage doesn't really scale with capacity. I don't know if there is documentation out there about the maximum power that the device can handle but if you compare the original drive model with the one you are considering you can see if it's in the same ballpark.

These aren't really "supported", I'm guessing your warranty expired a decade ago. Buffalo still hosts all the firmware files/etc though there haven't been updates in a quite a while.

If you like, you can run modern Linux it:

I don't want to go buy drives if the performance is going to be horrible.
I just use it for backup so not too worried about it not being super fast or anything but want it to be useable

It's a ~13 year old device, performance will be fairly horrible by today's standards. It sounds like you've got it working with your current drives, you can run whatever performance tests are relevant. Newer/faster drives may improve performance somewhat but probably not dramatically.

so do you think this is worth the shipping for ebay or just donate it to goodwill or recycle?

I know some people still find uses for them, I've worked with a couple of people who set up Debian on them using my installer. I assume they use them for simple backups or just to experiment with Linux. If goodwill/savers/etc will take it that might a good way to find it a new home. You could try selling on ebay though they are pretty large/heavy for their worth which could make shipping impractical.
