Link station not very reliable

When I bought the link station duo as a network storage device, I thought I covered my Back-up problem. WRONG! The fact that I have two drives and runing raid one provided me no security at all. After a power outage and restart, my link station failed to be recognise by the network. I spend 1 hour with tech support only to find out that the control board was not working and I would have to return the unit for replacement. What about my data? 650 gbs of mirror data. I need it back.

No such luck. if the motherboard crashes do to line spikes, you need to return the unit, but they don't give you the data back. Furthermore, if I bought another unit and exchanged the drives, they may not work. they may automatically reformat loosing the data. My only change was to take the unit to a data restoration company and have them retrieve the data from the drives. I did this and it will cost me about 400 euros plus another drive to put the recovered data on. Whats the point of having a Buffalo unit with Raid 1 if I can't retrieve the data once the mother board goes dead? Why would they design a product where you can't replace the motherboard without erasing the disc drives?

This is a joke. We had to shut down the office until the data was retrieved. How nieve I was to belive we were covered. I guess I need a back up unit to back up the back up unit.

Buffalo in my book is a pile of s*** I will leave it at that. I guess I need to find another company that has reliable units where you can replace the controller without distroying your data. It won't be another Buffalo

Sounds like you were using the unit as a Primary data source, and not to Backup data.  Otherwise, you could have simply replaced your unit and reloaded the data from the Primary data source. Also, line filters/UPSs are always suggested for use with data backup devices.
