Drivestation using Seagate 7200.11 with SD15

Not really happy here,

 

just talked to both Seagate and Buffalo tech support about my Drivestation  1TB (HDHS10TIU2) which sudenly bricked and it has been frustrating.

 

There's a very  known problem with the seagate 7200.11 with firmware SD15 (which my Drivestation uses) where it simply suddenly just fails to be recognized by the bios, bricking the drive.

 

I called Seagate after reading abotut this problem and because it is OEM from Buffalo they said it was Buffalo's issue to resolve. But Seagate support did confirm my drive had the defective firmware.  Seagate are providing the fix for it as well as offering data recovery services for free for anyone affected. Other OEM third parties who use this drive are also providing a firmware fix and data recovery through seagate like Dell (http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19272149.aspx">http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19272149.aspx).

 

Seagate support called me together with Buffalo and exactly what i thought would happen, Buffalo support said they had no firmware update for the drive and no way to recover the data and suggested data recovery services (ie i need to go spend over 1000$ to get my data back). I'm upset Buffalo is not being accountable for this known problem and not handling it like other 3rd parties. Buffalo did offer to RMA the product which is obvious since it is under warranty but i don;t really care about that, i want my data back.

 

I'm not happy with Seagate either but they told me to call their data recovery center monday (i365) and open a case with them, i will call them monday and see what they say. I'll report back here if someone actually takes responsability for this known faulty problem.

 

If others have had this issue would love to hear it.

Ok thankfully looks like Seagate will fix the drive if it's indeed related to the firmware issue.
