Hi,

Can I use the LS-CHL as a portable - standalone HDD by connecting this to the USB port of my laptop/Desktop?

Based on this answer I have to decide? please help

No, the devices usb ports are used for external hdd used as extra space, printers to use as a print server, and connecting to a smart UPS to shut down properly in case of a power outage.

The USB ports cannot be used to make the NAS a standalone hard drive but Im sure the LinkStation should be able to connect to a laptop via a laptop's network cable port.

  • A typical setup would mean the NAS is connected to a router (via network cable) and any laptop connected to the router (via network cable or wirelessly) can access it the NAS.
  • Therefore you should be able to remove the router from the setup and have the NAS connected directly to the laptop's network cable port. Although this will mean the unit is still working as a NAS drive (NAS = NETWORK attached storage), the entire "NETWORK" is now constrained to the unit and your laptop, no other laptops can access it.

The Nas units can only be used with  ethernet  cables via a direct connection or through a router, hub or switch , thats it nothing else.
