Hi,

I tried to connect my WD 1TB world book external disk to LS-CHL500 usb port. The NAS able to list what usb drive is connected to the buffalo but it can't detect it. Do i need to configure anything on the LS-CHL500 to detect usb drive?

tanjl

If you can detect it, then you need to format it to XFS format. It is done in Disk Management/Disk Format section.

tanjl,

I guess I need to format it to XFS format before Buffalo NAS can detect it. What happen if the external drive already formated with FAT32 or NTFS with data on it, can I access to the file without formating it?

tanjl

Nope. Cos the format is in XFS, readable in a linux environment only. It will not be able to transfer into a FAT32/NTFS format.

If you want to read it in a FAT32/NTFS environment, then you need to manually transfer the data, from the LS, copy thru the network with the USB drive connected to a computer.

THe drive backup in the LS is a backup for the LS, just  in case if the LS runs into some problems and the local service centre did a replacement for you, you can restore the data back to the LS from your USB drive.

I've tested on a smaller usb drive (100GB) with NTFS format. The LS-CHL500 is able to detect and access the file from LS-CHL500. I don't understand why LS-CHL500 unable to detect large usb drive (e.g 1TB)? Is there a limitation on Buffalo NAS when usb drive that are large than 100GB need to format it into XFS?

tanjl

You mean that your 100gb usb drive when plugged into LS-CHL is able to see the files when you open up the directory of the LS-CHL?

I've tried on a 80gb usb drive with NTFS format and I cannot even see the files. I've tried copying a file into it but it fails.

I proceed to format it to XFS in the LS-CHL and then try transferring again and it was successful.

What firmware are you currently using?

wkstan

I just check on my usb disk, it's 320GB formated with NTFS. I'm able to view all the files when I plug into LS-CHL usb port. I'm using the latest firmware (1.07).

tanjl

Are you able to transfer files to & from the Mounted USB drive in LS-CHL?

wkstan

Yes, I'm able to view, copy and delete from my external usb mounted into LS-CHL...
