PC won't boot with 1TB drivestation attatched

I have other USB drives connected, and neither causes this problem. After installing the new Buffalo unit, Windows won't boot - at least not as long as I've sat and watched for some many minutes.  Buffalo drive activity light is working, but my PC Hard drive stops and the PC appears to hang - I can't even access the BIOS setup once it's in this freeze.  Also when I allow the Windows to boot up and then attatch, I occasionally get a "drive not ready error" which, after clicking "continue" anyway, seems to have no effect.  

 

These are likely two different problems. But my my concern is why the Buffalo unit is causing the PC to wig out.

 

I've searched here and could only find one suggestion to make sure the bios isn't set to boot up from a USB device. It isn't.

 

Any other suggestions?

Have you tried a BIOS/Chipset update?

No, I have not tried a bios update, for two reasons. One, I've heard horror stories of updating causing a nightmare. My PC is a work machine and losing it because of some mistake I make, or the software makes is a big risk.

 

Secondly, I contacted the MOBO maker (ASUS) and their technical support's only suggestion was unplugging the drive on startup.  They wouldn't even tell me whether my MOBO will support a 1TB USB Drive. Not alot of confidence in ASUS now.

 

Again. I'll take suggestions.

I have the same problem.  The PC bleeps repeatedly as if I had a key pressed on tyhe keyboard at boot.  Any ideas as it's a drag having to disconnect the USB connection to boot?

   I managed to fix disabling BIOS check for USB boot device!! :-)
