Will we have Terastation Live/Pro Sleep Mode?

I had a list of nice things to add to the Terastations if possible via a firmware update but it is lostThe one thing I do remember is some sort of sleep mode that you can set, or an auto-sleep modeI'm not sure what is involved with this kind of upgrade but somehow it would be niceI guess that brings up the question of whether it is better to just leave the drive on, or go into a sleep mode.

Currently I just turn off the TS's I know I won't be using and that tends to be the ones that I use for backup because I like to do my backups on demand as opposed to scheduled.

I also noticed I can deleted all trashboxes on my TS-Pro, but not on the TS-LiveIs there a reason for this?

As for the TS Pro we do not know when there will be a new firmware. You do have a good idea though. Some of our Linkstation models have a switch on the back that say auto/manual. This switch will allow the device to automatically shut down when the machine that has the client utility installed on it shuts down, and the unit starts when the machine first boots as well. For your TS Live however, there should be an option in the share floder portion of the web gui to disable recycle bin. If you do not see that make sure your firmware is up to date. You will find this setting in the web gui buy logging into the IP address through a web browser. Then go to shared folders. Once there you will see a yellow icon next to each share folder you have. Click on the yellow icon and it will have all the settings for that share. If you do not see any recycle bin settings make sure your firmware is up to date. They should be there.

i realize my Terastation Live does not have a sleep function, but i have heard that it is generally built-in to sata drives that if they are not accessed for a certain period of time, the drive itself will go to sleep or low-power mode or something.  so, in the hopes of at least allowing the drives inside the Terastation to get to sleep, i've been trying to get the Terastation to stop accessing the drives when not in use.  i've tried basically turning everything off in the settings.  although turning the Media Server off made a big difference (it used to access like once a second), the Terastation still accesses the drives once or twice a minute.

is what i'm trying to do -- making the Terastation completely stop touching the drives when not in use -- impossible?  if not, what it is that i'm overlooking?

Given that the Terastation Live will always be querying the drives and does NOT support drive spindown, you're out of luck, sorry.  Drives will always be spinning.

thanks for that response. it will save me from banging my head against the wall trying to get the thing to do something it cannot do.

so since it cannot do what i want by design, i figured, if anything, i'd have to search for something unofficial. i came across this:
http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Real_NAS

Here is the abstract:
'This howto presents a step by step guide to convert the TeraStation into a real NAS like server. The principal motivation behind this conversion is that to maximize data reliability, the disks containing that data should be off as much as possible. To achieve this goal we will add another hard disk to hold the operating system and possibly some other frequently changing or frequently accessed data. Also, this conversion gives us a safe way to install another Operating System to unlock the usefulness of our TeraStation to its full potential.'

seems the 'disks containing that data should be off as much as possible' part is exactly what i'm interested in. reading that page further reveals that they are dealing with an IDE Terastation while what i have, the Terastation Live, is SATA.

anybody know if there is something similar to Real NAS that supports the Terastation Live? or, for that matter, doesn't need to be similar to Real NAS.. any alternate OS (or is it firmware?) might be interesting. :)

thanks!
