I just took a ministation data vault out of the box, plugged in the esb cable and the ojnly thing that happens is the green power led on the drive lights and the drive clicks and my pc does not recognize the drive.  Is the unit dead out of the box?  I phoned the tech support help line but gave up after being on hold for 30 minutes.

Yes it sounds like a bad HDD.  I would return it to the retailer or call back in for an RMA replacement.
