I can update the firmware on the primary Teraserver, but I cannot access the target failover backup device to update is firmware.  If I try to login to the backup target device, I get a note that says, "This TeraStation is a backup target for failover.  To keep it working as a backup target, click 'Log Out'.  To make changes, click 'Force Failover to Stop'."  But if I hover over the "Force Failover to Stop" button, it says to not do this unless absolutely necessary.

Is there a different way to update the firmware on the backup target device?

Unfortunately, no. You have to stop the failover prior to updating.

You should be able to put the backup Terastation into maintenance mode to update the firmware.
