Buffalo linkstation Static IP settings failed

I was trying to update the firmware (currently 1.13 build 2.35) on my linkstation (for the first time ever) and the updater couldn't find it on the network (I've always connected it directly to the laptop via a LAN cable, never with a router in between).

I read that it needs to have the first 3 number to be the same as the laptop,

so I tried to change it to a static 192.168.1.123, first via the NASnavigator GUI, which yeilded the "Drive does not reply" error. Next I tried the webinterface and it seems to have succeeded in the change (i even got a prompt telling me to access the webinterface via the new IP address).

BUT, now I can't access nothing via either the old (DHCP) or new IP address.

NASnavigator can't find it either. However the weird thing is if I connect the laptop and linkstation via a router, I can see that the linkstation is detected on the router interface with its static IP, and I can ping the same address. What gives?

1.13 is the latest build for your Linkstation, the 1.74 firmware is for a different version of the unit you have.
PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.

Thanks davo, but how'd you know that when I haven't even mentioned which exact model i'm using?

davo

I'm guessing it's an LS-CHL based on the current firmware you have installed?

Well, you guessed wrong. Its a LS-WVL (that's what the label said, but on the status page it says CS-WV).

By the way, I somehow managed to get back into the web interface (not sure how), and set it back to DHCP, applied the settings, and it seemed successful. BUT, the ip address is still at the same static one that I set (192.168.1.123). AND, I still can't get the firmware updater to find the NAS even when I see it with NASNavigator.  =[

Ok so, 1.13 was also the latest firmware for the CS-WVL and the same above applies.

Ok. But I suppose the error message from the updater should say that it's already the latest, and not tell me that the NAS could not be found?

or you switch from CS-WVL to LS-WVL
now you can use FW 1.74

I don't get it. Can someone explain why is the model stated different on the webinterface and on the label? Are the 2 models essentially 2 different products or just variants of the same one?

Could this error that I've been getting quite often be of any importance or relevance to the issues I'm facing?

Its the same device.
One number in the flash is different.

Ok, sorry, I'm really quite new to these stuff. Would you mind telling me where to change that number?

Thank you.

I don't know any German.

Is this some kind of 3rd party hack? What are the chance I'll mess up my NAS with this?
