I have really old buffalo link station that is hanging on last of its life.  I use to have 2nd Link station as its backup, but it moved on with its life and died about a month ago.

For this outdated Link Station LS-Q6.0TL/R5, even the hard drive replacements are getting expensive.

I wanted to learn more about functions of NAS than what was built into the machine or to have more upgrade or addon option, I am testing FREENAS.

However I am encountering problem moving the files from Link Station to FREENAS server because some of the names on the Link Station is too long.

I would prefer to backup directly using the backup function, but it doesn't look like this link station have more popular backup solution of today like Rsync compatibility to other backup solution.  Or what backup service/protocol does this old link station use?

Or does anyone have a better method of copying all my files from Link Station to my FREENAS server?
