LS421DE External backup HD crashes Buffalo when removed

We have an external hard disk plugged in to the front USB socket and once a week the Buffalo auto backs up the NAS contents to the external HD.  The backup works well, however after the backup the hard disk is unplugged and taken off-site.  This appears to crash the NAS as it cannot be accessed across the network or via a browser.  A reboot of the NAS fixes this, but we want to avoid this problem, obviously!

We wish to perform a weekly backup to an external hard disk so that it can be taken away - so what is the best way of doing this without crashing the system?

Thanks

davo

If you remove a USB disk then the SMB/AFP service is stopped (temporarily). Are you safely removing the USB disk via the admin page first?
PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.

HI thanks for the reply,
No, they are not removing the HD safely.  They need a simple backup solution allowing them to remove the HD quickly.  Logging into the admin page and unmounting the HD just would not be simple enough for them, unfortunately.

Any other thoughts?
Thanks

Nope, the option is to remove the disk correctly, if this is not done then all bets are off. Eitherway, even if the disk is safely remove it will stop the SMB service for a few seconds.

As far as i remember the is a way to safely remove the USB disk via the function button, you might want to have a look at the manual for this process.
