I have a Linkstation Quad 4TB unit, and was wondering if it was possible to swap out the 4 1TB drives for 4 3TB drives?

If not, any 4 2TB drives will work, or do I have to be particular on what type of drive I get?

Do GPT, 4k sector, or "advanced format" drives work?

Jotin

We do not support upgrading the HDD's in the unit.

The LS-Q4.0TL/R5 is the same as the LS-Q2.0TL/R5 and LS-Q8.0TL/R5 in enclosure and hardware only difference is the pre-installed drives.

Iomega istore, WD and a hell of a lot more sell either a bare enclosure and one populated and then they never recommend to change the drives yet other then the drives the units are identical go figure. Im sure they do it so you buy a whole new unit. Bad customer service in my opion.

Check the latest firmware which i think is 1.41 it actaully says support for larger then 2tb drives. Thats the question ive posted to see what the larger actualy stands for,

I think the log means external drives but I havn't gotten an answer myself on that question yet. But either way, the reason we do not support upgrading the drives is for your warranty and for the fact that the power supply inside might not support drives that are larger than what it came with.

"Performance matters"... Sounds like it only matters when it doesn't matter.  Of all the ridiculous answers I've encountered in my years of system engineering, this one takes the cake.   This mindset is unique in that no harware manufacturer worth a teaspoon of salt would take such a stance as to say we don't support upgrading something which should obviously be designed with upgrading in mind.  Everyone on this board seems to be so overly polite, probably because they are afraid that they won't get any help if they tell it like it is.  Please, allow me:  Buffalo support is nothing short of worthless and lame.   They certainly haven't impressed me--- and frankly if you can't help then you should sit on the sidelines and watch quietly...   Who on this planet has ever worked with a hard drive raid array that wasn't able to be upgraded?  Is this some outrageous ploy to try to make another million in a day?  As if someone who gets such terrible support is going to go out and replace an expensive piece of worthless hardware with something made by the same company.  I'm just glad that I can figure this stuff out on my own, without a bunch of wannabe weasels to tell me that they don't support.... or this common procedure will void your warranty.   Such a backwards mindset I've never encountered in my life.  Backwards and mentally deficient.  If you can't help, just say so and spare us the insults.   UNBELIEVABLE, THAT YOU WOULD SELL A RAID ARRAY THAT YOU WON'T SUPPORT QUESTIONS WITH REGARD TO UPGRADING THE SIZE OF THE HARD DRIVES!  JUST INSANE!

Do you intend to tell us that the external power supply that comes with these units is an internal power supply?!?!?  There is no power supply inside this unit.  I think you need to go back to computer school.  Or better yet, take up another line of work.  You'd make a good lawyer!   MERCY!   Regardless the hard drives don't use all that much power, let alone the fact that a 1 tb hard drive doesn't use any more power than a 2tb hard drive.  Or at least the diffence is negligible.  PLEASE STOP!  Shut down your factories!  Or fire your Research and Development team.  You people are just arrogant and ignorant!

That was a world class rant but he's right.

Not sure how hes right. When you buy something or sign up for something, You are agreeing to the TOS(Terms of service) or TOU(Terms of use), that right there pretty much removes the question of a company if your going against it.

I also HIGHLY doubt this guy is a System Engineer, because if he was, this is pretty common. Most companies that sell NAS and other types of storage and equipment will state They don't support upgrading something or around those lines. But if he asked in simple lame terms instead of PMS'ing, if buffalo or someone with the knowledge could provided him the information and he will do the rest, that he understands buffalo cant assist but regular users on the forums can... even google it, tons of info out there. Hes probably one of those guys who was raised with a silver spoon and thinks when they demand something or ask for something its should be done.

Besides if he was a System Engineer, building a Nas is more effective when in comes to cost and performance. He should know that.
Units I own: TS-XL, TS-WXL, LS-WVL, TS-RXL,  TS5400, TS-RVHL,

I don't work for Buffalo but i do love there products enough to help people

Yeah, silver spoon, thats me.  The first PC I ever built was an 8080 in 1975 at age 11.  Since then I've performed almost every job description in IT that there is.  Linkstations are simple.  I don't tend to rely on others for help, but when someone buys a product and they spend a lot of the money, that they worked for, for that product then I expect that they could get some civility when they ask the manufacturer of that product a simple question.  I simply can not fathom why a company like this wouldn't have an upgrade path available for their customers, especially since upgrading these NAS boxes is so simple.  To void a warranty because someone wants to swap to a larger hard drive is LUDICROUS!   There's no excuse.  And your preconception of me couldn't have been more incorrect (you should get a different psychic or stay out of the prejudice business).
