USB Backup issues on LS520D - Help!!!!!!

My LS520D seems very reluctant to perform a back up to the (western Digital ) Hard drive connected to it by USB.
I follow the presumably correct process on the online portal and highlight where I want the back up to be saved to but each time the backup drive is empty.

Please help asap as I am some weeks without backup.

What firmware is running on the Linkstation and what file format is the USB disk?
