Firmware update problem

I could not find a problem close enough to mine to help, so here it is. I have a VL 1.0 that needs the firmware updated. I do not know the password, so tried powering down and restarting while holding function button. When I went to settings to try to change password, the screen came up in chinese characters. I do not know how to change language, so need help with a procedure for that. Then I have a shot at doing something with the password. I do not remember changing it, but do not know what the default would have been. Any help with these items would be greatly appreciated.

Default password is password so try that.
