We have a HS-DH2.0TGL/R5 with a dead motherboard, my question is if we can find another unit like this somewhere, can we just plug in our drives and rebuild the raid array ? I believe we had 4 drives in Raid 5.

If you want you can buy a unit off ebay or cragslist and it should work so as long as you keep the drives in order and the unit actually works.

If you want to recover the data only then i suggest http://www.ufsexplorer.com/ and follow this guide http://www.ufsexplorer.com/inf_terastation.php

its not a terastation but this should apply to it.

The only real issue i see is if you actual have a bad disk and you think its the unit. how do you know its the motherboard? Also on the unit there might be different model so check your stick and see the model. If it says v2, v3, etc you need to buy that one. Im not sure if your unit have different versions just to lazy to research and find out.
Units I own: TS-XL, TS-WXL, LS-WVL, TS-RXL,  TS5400, TS-RVHL,

Thanks for the reply. Our tech called Buffalo support to try and revive the unit and they said the motherboard was fried but could not confirm if we use the drives in another unit that is the same model if it will just rebuild the raid.

Regarding that UFS Explorer software, have you actually had any success using it ? I came across it on the web this morning before I saw your reply.

I dont use it. Though i have recommended it plenty of times for other units. I have a Redhat server with 12bay setup so i usually do it that way if i need to recover data as the buffalo os is linux base and use xfs as the primary format.

^^ thanks, we'll give it a shot with the software. (Crossing fingers )

Hi Joma,

We tried that software, it was unable to recover anything. the drives seem to be ok, they detect fine under windows. Anything else we could try ?

joma90

What happens when you use the software?  If that doesnt work you can try other software or contact a data recover company.

Not sure exactly but my tech said the software could not recognize thew raid array. I found an old unit online , exact same PN as we have , there is no Version # or Rev # , do you think we could just pop in our drives into that and it would re-build the array ?

joma90

They might not had enter the right settings on the software. They need to make sure there following http://www.ufsexplorer.com/inf_terastation.php. I know some tech dont like hearing that but it is what it is. This program should be able to read it.

So as long as its the same mode and revision. Only way to tell the revision is if there is a V2, V3 in the model number  or If there are more usb ports on the unit you are buying vs your unit that is dead.

Was this ever resolved?  I have either a dead motherboard or a dead power supply... did putting the units in an identical device work?

Thank you!

We got some data back using the software mentioned above but not all, we ended up sending the drives to professional data recovery facility and they had no issues getting all data back for us.
