I was wondering if I turn off RAID mode can I use one drive as primary and use the Linkstation backup function to automatically back up the primary drive to the secondary drive?

Yes, you can use the inbuilt backup function on the Linkstation to do this. However this is not a proper backup.

A proper backup is 2 copies on 2 different devices.
