I just put this HD onto a new PC i got.  I have been using it as a backup for media on my old PC, and just wnated to continue to do that.

It is the HD-HC500IU2 external HD.

When i plug it al lin, it recognizes new hardware and it says it's a "Samsung HD501LJ Device" and it will not install drivers for it.

I have the CD that came with the HD, but that does not do anything except tell you hwo to plug it in.

I have already manually uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them and i have tried updateting the drivers, and i even downloaded drivers from Buffalo's site, but everytime windows sees this drive it is a "Samsung HD501LJ Device".

Everytime i reboot, it says new hardware found again, but then it fails on driver installation.

Device manager says

"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."

Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how i can fix this?  i'll take any suggestions.  I am very computer literate, so feel free to give any and all suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Before we come to solutions lets encircle the problem. It is usually the first step.

Is it the same on all COmputers or just on 1 machine?

If there are problems on several machines, does it work at all on minimum 1 correctly? - which one?

What OS does the machine have, if it is just 1? (and some more details about the system)

I hooked up the HD to the old machine just to see what the device manager said, and oddly enough it has the same samsung HD listed for the buffalo drive.  But on that machine it says that the device is working properly.

Machine it's working on is a windows XP prof machine

Machine it's not working on it s windows home machine

the drivers are also oddly not the same enen though i installed it the same on both machines.  the one it is workign on has an extra driver in the driver details "windows\system32\drivers\disk.sys" .  Not sure why that is not on the new machine.

Hi, Windows home means XP home or Vista home premium? So the problem is in the home system we conclude.

The first thing is always, shut down, disconnect the power supply on the PC, wait 10s, connect, power up and try again. Test all USB ports. Next step I would check the chipset drivers and install the latest. If you experimented a lot with some W98 drivers delete the device in device manager, copy the USB drivers from another machine (usbstor.inf, usbstor.PNF) and try again....

Thats for start, otherwise you will find more solutions like delete infcache and such.
