Problem accessing TeraStation Live 2TB with Raid10

I use a Terastation Live, set up with Raid 10, for storing centrally all of the digital data (family videos, photos, music and documents) used in my household via 1 desktop and 2 laptops. One laptop uses XP, the other and the desktop use Vista 32.

Following a power cut, TeraStation Live failed to Boot. All 4 disks appear OK but the system refuses to boot.

Normal turning on ends up with the frozen message 'System Now Booting'.

Trying to force EM mode by pressing INIT and Start together ends up with the frozen message 'System EM mode Booting'.

Each drive has been removed one at a time, but with no success in forcing the system to boot and/or identifying a faulty drive.

I have also attemped forcing EM mode by taking out the power cable.

When I take out all four drives and power on the unit, the message I get is what one would expect "HD ALL E07. All HD not found."

When I start the TeraStation Live with all four drives removed in EM mode by simultaneously pressing the start and the INIT button, I get the message : "TFTP Mode E06 Lost Boot Image. This machine IP 192.168.11.150. Server IP 192,168.11.1".

It would appear that all four disks are OK (all lights are green) but that the firmware has become corrupt.

I cannot see the TeraStation using the NAS Navigator - all fields are blank. Neither does it respond to 'pinging' - 'Destination host unreachable'.

Please advise me what steps I can take to replace the corrupt firmware and, more importantly, to recover all of my data on the TeraStation, and, if necessary, transfer it to another place.

Many thanks in anticipation of some useful advice.

Well, the data is most likely still there, but in order to recover the terastation, you will need to wipe the drives first, then do the TFTP boot recovery and a firmware flash. Before doing this, you can use a Linux machine or UFS Explorer to virtually mount the RAID and pull the data off. The license you will need for UFS Explorer I believe costs 50 Euro, but make sure you can see the data with the trial version first.

Is there any reason to assume that UFS Explorer will not work with the European version of the Terastation, or cause any problems?

Also, could using it invalidate my warranty?

Nope. UFS Explorer simply mounts the RAID, it does not modify the firmware.

I emailed your comments to the Buffalo Support in Dublin that covers the UK and have today recieved the following reply :

"The Forum is for the American support team who are based in the U.S, they do support TFTP on their devices however, this is not supported on the European models and running it can cause warranty issues if a problem occured during the TFTP connection. The Terastation unfortunately is going to have to be replaced, I'm afraid."

In some way there would appear to be a difference between the US and European models.

Many thanks for your help, but it would appear that I have reached the end of the road unless someone else has a solution.

There is no hardware difference between the US and EU models of which I know. The difference is in what the firmware supports. Sorry for your troubles.
