Hi, we had a rare storm last night and today my linkstation seems dead. The power pack was dead, so I've replaced that, and lights now show on the device. However, the disk does not spin and the device does not function at all. I've put the disk into my PC and it recognises the disk, but I can't mount it, I'm guessing wrong file system.

I'm thinking of buying a new linkstation and putting my old drive in it - any advice about doing this?

This is the second linkstation that I've had, they seem to die easily.

I would recommend in the future that you use spike and surge protection with your computer equipment, believe me this can save you a lot of money.

If the drive works with your PC, but not the Linkstation then I would think the drive might be salvageable, but the linkstation is not.

If you do want to get a new linkstation it would be better to transfer your data from the old drive to the new linkstation, rather than risking it by using the old drive.

Hi, I was under the impression that the drive was formatted in XLS which is why it never mounted in windows - is this not the case? It was spinning in my PC and showed in Device Manager so I believe it's intact. If I got a new linkstation how would I transfer the data from this drive to the new linkstation if I can't mount it in windows?

Thanks!

There are XFS readers for windows if recovering data is your primary objective. Professional data recovery is also an option, of course. DriveSavers gives a discount to Buffalo customers.

I would also -highly- recommend you getting a new LinkStation 410 or 420 to replace that LS-CHL. I have an LS-CHL at home, and it's a champ, but the new ones are cool. ;)

**A single copy of data, even on a RAID array, is NOT a backup! Hard drive failure is not a question of IF, but WHEN! Don't take my word for it, take Google's!**
