Linkstation Live Bit Torrent Security Certificate

   Does anyone know whether the issue with security certificates that lots of folks have encountered with the standard Linkstation device is solved using the same technique on a Linkstation Live with Bit Torrent? I would imagine it is but so far I don't seem to have had much luck.

The issue I'm having is that when I go to access my linkstation via buffalonas.com I enter www.buffalonas.com/mylinkstation and IE comes back with the response "There is a problem with the website's security certificate".

 

If I click on the "Continue" option, which it says is not recommended, I get the logon/password screen and I can login. However I do notice that at the top of the browser it has https://94.192.5.212:46519

 

I can access all my files (JPEG and MP3) OK except for AVI files. With AVI files I get Windows Media Player starting up and get a message saying "WMP encountered an error when connecting to the server. The security information from the server could not be validated" if I click on "Web Help" the Microsoft site gives me error message C00D11E4 and then 800C0019 and says there is no information for these messages.

 

Any clues on how to correct this situation?

Try downloading http://www.videolan.org/vlc/">VLC and see if that helps.  Eliminate WMP from the equation.

 

 

Also, in IE-->Tools-->Internet Options-->Security Tab

 

Click on Trusted Sites, Click on the Sites button and add https://94.192.5.212 to your list.  Restart IE and try again.

So is this solved or what?  I have the same security issue and my family members that login to use web access get confused.  Is it an SSL error due to the NAS or Buffalo's site?  I'm confused on this.

 

And the AVI files don't work for us either... no reason they shouldn't nor should everyone have to download a completely different media player as well.

I agree.  An official response would be nice :/  But judging by my own issues here as well as others, getting more than one reply to any topic is rare...Pretty sad Buffalo...pretty sad.  Especially since they (Paul) responded asking a question almost a month ago and has yet to respond to the information he requested.

 

The lack of support is the only reason I'm really trying to add suggestions here...

 

With that said, you're correct Reimersnj in that you shouldn't have to download another media player just to play AVI files, but trying another media player may help to isolate and pinpoint the issue here.

Sorry about the long time before my reply, i've been gathering information.

 

The Linkstations all use self-signed SSL certificates. Getting a certificate signed by a CA like Verisign for each device would unnecessarily raise the price of our products, and is not really necessary. Add an exception for the security error, then the computer will store the certificate and you won't get the issue anymore.

 

Windows Media Player unfortunately is not able to add exceptions to my knowledge, so if you're using HTTPS/SSL for web access, you will need to use another player.

Windows Media Player (as of 11 at least) uses IE's security zone settings. 

 

In WMP, Tools-->Options-->Security Tab-->Zone Settings

 

Click on 'Trusted Sites' and Click the 'Sites' button.  Add your site to the list, restart IE and WMP to test.

 

If Colin could gather some more information and supply some info on maybe the Advanced Security settings in IE that may help...that would be much appreciated.
