I'm planning to buy HDD LS-XH1.0TL but I want to confirm first the following:
1. Is it posible to set a Web Server on this LinkStation?
2. Is it posible to run ASP or PHP or CGI or they have a plan to include this later?
3. My router is set to have a Dynamic IP address and therefore I dont know what will be the
new IP address of my router if I want to access it outside my home.
Is there a way to know what is my router IP Address so I can use http://MyRouterIpAddress/MyFolder/index.html
   without using http://www.buffalonas.com/member" target="_blank">www.buffalonas.com/member ?.
I understand that maybe LinkStation is sending the IP address to http://www.buffalonas.com/" target="_blank">www.buffalonas.com and therefore maybe it is
posible that http://www.buffalonas.com/" target="_blank">www.buffalonas.com can give this IP address to the owner of this LinkStation when accessing outside of their home.

Thank you very much for your reply.

hotbyte,

Allow me to answer your questions in the order they were presented:

1. A web server setup is not possible on this device as it is only constructed as a NAS (Network Access Storage).  Unfortunately, the common misconception that these devices are cheaper solutions to full blown web servers continues to run rampant.  Reason being that the system board of the device just does not have the capability (nor the resources) that a server does.

2. Since this device has a hard coded firmware installed on it the manipulation of the scripts is (albeit possible) not recommended.

3. Setting up FTP is really the only way, besides buffalonas.com, to access remotely.  The LinkStation sends the public IP address of your router to the servers and what port it's communicating on.  In the event of UPnP this explanation would be much longer.  However, the clif notes version is that the buffalonas.com server records this information in addition with the buffalonas.com user/password and it is then stored there.  Whenever someone enters in the NAS name specified the server checks its records and then directs the traffic to the public IP address at which point the router receives a request on a static port (in the event UPnP isn't configured) which is then routed to your NAS for any type of verification that would be needed.  Once confirmed the NAS will allow that user to access the file system on the NAS.

If you need further explanation please don't hesitate.

This post is getting close to answering the question i have about my LinkStation CHL30C:

M internet service provider can only provide me with a dynamic IP address. Does using buffalonas.com overcome the problems this brings? I.e. if my router's public IP address changes, will the LinkStation update buffalonas.com of this so that it is possible for an external user to connect via buffalonas.com without needing be notified of the change in IP address?

Also, are there any good instructions on how to set up port forwarding?

My router doesn't seem to support UPnP (although it claims to).

Thanks!
