RAID is not a replacement for a backup! Here's why.

Hi everyone.

I've been having problems with my 2nd Quad NAS for a week now. Here's the setup and what happened.

Tray 1: 3TB WD

Tray 2: 3TB WD

Tray 3: 1.5 TB WD

Tray 4: 1.5 TB Seagate

I started off with only 3 disks. Tray 1 - 2 - 3. All disks were in standalone mode.

Tray 1: had about 1TB of files on it.

Tray 2: was empty

Tray 3: had about 1.4TB of files on it (full.)

I decided to mirror my data as I did with the other NAS that I have so I RMMed Tray 1 onto Tray 2. (I use Tray instead of disk as not to get confused with the error message).

So after countless hours, I had a perfect RAID1 mirror on Tray 1 and Tray 2.

I still had a spare 1.5TB Seagate laying around so I decided to do the same for Tray 3, so I inserted the disk into Tray 4, formatted it and started the RMM process from Tray 3 to Tray 4.

All seemed to work seemlessly but NAS Navigator the day after seemed to show an error.

E30: An error occurred, so hard drive 3 was removed from the RAID array. Replace hard drive 0

I could not really make sense of it because

  1. The manual does not speak about drive 0. It speaks about drive 1-2-3-4.
  2. If there is a problem with drive 3, then why do I need to replace drive 0?

I hoped it would be a bug so I rebooted but the NAS would not come up anymore.

To safeguard my data I bought UFSExplorer, and copied the data of Tray 1 and Tray 3 to a new backup hdd of 3TB. My data was safe.

I decided to start anew.

So I removed all partitions from the 4 trays and put them back in the NAS. I booted, it installed the firmware and I had a clean system.

With no data on it, I set up a RAID 1 between tray 1 and tray 2 as well as a RAID 1 between tray 3 and tray 4.

It would take a day or more I found out later to check the RAID so I left it on overnight.

I just woke up and I get this error message again:

E30: An error occurred, so hard drive 3 was removed from the RAID array. Replace hard drive 0

It makes no sense to me. I'm about to reboot and think it will be the same problem as a few days ago.

My specific questions:

  1. What does it really mean?

  2. What should I do to get it back to work again?
(I spent way more than I imagined on disks already).

  3. How to copy the data back to the NAS and right procedure to make backups?
I've made a seperate thread about that here

Also, even though it gave the error, I can still log in to the web admin and both arrays are still checking the RAID, so I really don't get how it can say that a disk has been removed from the RAID and that it continues checking....

Any thoughts? I really hope to get my NAS to work so I can use it when I go out of town for a few weeks.

Can anyone of Buffalo help please?

It gets even more bizarre.

After it fully checked the RAID, the error still listed on NASnavigator each time I refreshed. To make sure, I also click on Array 2 - Check array and let it run in high speed. Web admin shows no error.

I thought the problem would be the same as the week before after a reboot... so I rebooted and all 4 disks are working as well as both arrays.

I am totally confused now. What information from the NAS should I trust????

NAS Navigator told me that disk3!!! had been removed from the RAID.

It also told me to replace disk 0!!!

After rebooting the all disks are online and in their proper arrays like nothing happened.

What to make of this?
